Why be a Christian?

It is human nature to describe ourselves as “good”. After all, we aren’t as bad as other people. We try to compare our goodness with other people’s wickedness.

But what if we compare our goodness to other people’s goodness? Can we compare ourselves to others who have selflessly given their lives to a good cause?

What if it is not about how “good” you are? One day a man ran up to Jesus and called him “good teacher”. Jesus said “Don’t call me ‘good’, no one is good – except God alone.” (Mark 10:18) If Jesus himself couldn’t be called “good” then who are we to say we are? We all have lied or cheated, gossiped, lusted or any number of other things that would cause us shame.

One day you will stand before the Perfect Judge, the One before whom nothing is hidden. You will be called to give an account of your life; every word that was spoken and every deed that was done (Revelation 20:11-15).

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

On that day what will you say to be sure your name is in that book of life?

Jesus Christ, the only son of God (John 3:16), became flesh (John 1:14) and lived a sinless life (Hebrews 4:15). He was tortured and crucified to pay the penalty that sin demanded (Mark 10:45) that all who believe on him might be saved (John 3:16, Romans 6:23). All it takes is to believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and to tell it to others and you will be saved. “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (Romans 10:9-10)

If you will do that you can become a Christian today and God will instantaneously wipe away your sins and give you a clean slate. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18). If you hear Him calling you be quick to answer. Your life will never be the same!

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” ~Revelation 3:20
